Roulette payouts are fixed. Every bet type has a specific payout ratio that never changes — regardless of the casino, the variant, or how the wheel has been spinning. What does change between variants is the probability of winning each bet, because the number of pockets on the wheel differs. This guide gives you every payout, every probability, and every calculation you need to understand exactly what each bet is worth before you place it.

Inside Bets — Payouts and Probabilities in Detail

Inside bets are placed on the number grid itself — on specific numbers or the lines between them. They pay more per win but win less frequently. Every inside bet on a European wheel carries the same 2.70% house edge — the difference between them is only their variance (how often they win and how much they pay when they do).

Straight Up — 35:1

A bet on a single number. Chip placed in the centre of any number on the grid, including 0. Pays 35:1 — a €10 bet returns €350 in profit plus the original €10 stake (total return €360). Win probability on European wheel: 2.70% (1 in 37). This bet wins roughly once every 37 spins on average. The highest payout and lowest win rate on the table.

Split — 17:1

A bet on two adjacent numbers. Chip placed on the line between any two horizontally or vertically adjacent numbers on the grid. Pays 17:1. Win probability: 5.41% (2 in 37). A €10 bet on a winning split returns €170 profit plus the €10 stake.

Street — 11:1

A bet on three consecutive numbers in a horizontal row. Chip placed on the outer left or right edge of the row. Pays 11:1. Win probability: 8.11% (3 in 37). There are 12 possible street bets on a European layout, plus the Trio bets involving zero.

Corner (Square) — 8:1

A bet on four numbers forming a square on the grid. Chip placed at the centre point where all four numbers meet. Pays 8:1. Win probability: 10.81% (4 in 37). Example: the corner of 1-2-4-5, or 17-18-20-21.

Six Line (Double Street) — 5:1

A bet on six numbers across two adjacent rows. Chip placed at the outer edge where two rows meet. Pays 5:1. Win probability: 16.22% (6 in 37). The six line is the most commonly used inside bet for combination strategies because it covers nearly one-sixth of the wheel at a meaningful payout.

Inside bet win amounts on a €10 base stake: Straight Up wins €350 · Split wins €170 · Street wins €110 · Corner wins €80 · Six Line wins €50. Each of these occurs at different frequencies — straight up roughly once every 37 spins, six line roughly once every 6 spins.

Outside Bets — Payouts and Probabilities in Detail

Outside bets cover large groups of numbers and are placed in the boxes surrounding the number grid. They win more frequently than inside bets but pay less per win. The single zero is not covered by any outside bet — when zero lands, all outside bets lose unless La Partage or En Prison is active.

Red / Black — 1:1

Covers all 18 red or all 18 black numbers. Pays 1:1 (even money). Win probability on European wheel: 48.65% (18 in 37). This is not 50% because zero is neither red nor black — the single zero pocket is the source of the house edge on this bet. A €10 bet on Red that wins returns €10 profit plus the original stake.

Odd / Even — 1:1

Covers all 18 odd or all 18 even numbers. Zero counts as neither odd nor even. Pays 1:1. Win probability: 48.65%. Mathematically identical to Red/Black in expected value and win rate.

Low (1–18) / High (19–36) — 1:1

Covers numbers 1–18 (Low) or 19–36 (High). Zero falls outside both ranges. Pays 1:1. Win probability: 48.65%. Again mathematically identical to Red/Black and Odd/Even.

Dozen — 2:1

Three possible bets: 1st Dozen (1–12), 2nd Dozen (13–24), or 3rd Dozen (25–36). Each covers 12 numbers. Pays 2:1. Win probability: 32.43% (12 in 37). A €10 bet on a winning dozen returns €20 profit plus the stake.

Column — 2:1

Three vertical columns of 12 numbers each on the betting grid. Each column covers 12 numbers, but they are not sequential — the grid layout determines which numbers fall in each column. Pays 2:1. Win probability: 32.43%. Identical in expected value to the Dozen bet despite covering different numbers.

European vs American Odds Compared

The payouts for every bet are identical on European and American wheels. What differs is the probability of winning each bet, because the American wheel has 38 pockets instead of 37. That extra pocket — the double zero — reduces the win probability of every single bet without changing what you receive when you win.

Bet Type Payout European Win % American Win % Difference
Straight Up35:12.70%2.63%−0.07%
Split17:15.41%5.26%−0.15%
Street11:18.11%7.89%−0.22%
Corner8:110.81%10.53%−0.28%
Six Line5:116.22%15.79%−0.43%
Dozen / Column2:132.43%31.58%−0.85%
Red / Black1:148.65%47.37%−1.28%
Odd / Even1:148.65%47.37%−1.28%
Low / High1:148.65%47.37%−1.28%
The impact is largest on even-money bets. Red/Black on an American wheel wins 47.37% of spins versus 48.65% on European — a 1.28 percentage point difference. That gap compounds over hundreds of spins. Over 500 spins at €10 per spin on even-money bets, you expect to lose €135 more on American than on European. Full cost analysis: house edge guide.

How to Calculate Any Roulette Payout

You do not need to memorise every payout ratio. Once you understand the underlying formula, you can calculate the fair payout and the house edge for any bet on any wheel.

Win Probability Formula

Win probability = (Numbers Covered ÷ Total Pockets) × 100

Example — Straight Up on European wheel: (1 ÷ 37) × 100 = 2.70%
Example — Red/Black on American wheel: (18 ÷ 38) × 100 = 47.37%
Example — Corner on European wheel: (4 ÷ 37) × 100 = 10.81%

Fair Payout Formula

The fair payout — what the casino would need to pay for the game to have zero house edge — is calculated as:

Fair Payout = (Total Pockets ÷ Numbers Covered) − 1

Example — Straight Up on European: (37 ÷ 1) − 1 = 36:1 (casino pays 35:1 — the difference is the edge)
Example — Red/Black on European: (37 ÷ 18) − 1 = 1.056:1 (casino pays 1:1 — the 0.056 difference is the edge)
Example — Corner on European: (37 ÷ 4) − 1 = 8.25:1 (casino pays 8:1)

House Edge Formula

House Edge = [(Fair Payout − Actual Payout) ÷ (Fair Payout + 1)] × 100

For every bet on a European wheel this produces 2.70%. For American: 5.26%. The shortfall between fair and actual payout is identical in percentage terms for every bet on the same wheel — which is why the house edge is uniform across all bet types.

Quick reference: To calculate expected profit on any bet — multiply your stake by the payout ratio. A €20 Corner bet that wins: €20 × 8 = €160 profit. To calculate expected loss per spin — multiply your total stake by the house edge. A €20 Corner bet on a European wheel: €20 × 0.027 = €0.54 expected loss per spin.

Announced Bets — Chip Costs and Coverage

Announced (call) bets are multi-chip combinations that cover specific sections of the physical wheel. They are available on European and French wheels only. The payout for each announced bet depends on which component of the combination wins — different chips within the same announced bet can pay at different rates.

Announced Bet Numbers Covered Chips Required Win Probability Notes
Voisins du Zéro179 chips45.95%Covers zero and 8 numbers either side. Multiple bet types within.
Tiers du Cylindre126 chips32.43%All placed as splits. Covers opposite side of wheel from zero.
Orphelins85 chips21.62%Mix of splits and one straight up (number 1).
Neighbours (5 numbers)55 chips13.51%5 straight-up bets on a chosen number plus 2 each side on wheel.

The total stake for an announced bet depends on your chip value. If your chip is worth €5, a Voisins du Zéro costs 9 × €5 = €45 per round. The coverage (45.95% of the wheel) does not mean you win that percentage of the time at a profit — the house edge still applies to the total amount staked across all chips.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the highest payout in roulette?

35:1 on a straight-up single number bet — this is the maximum payout on any standard roulette wheel. On Lightning Roulette, random multipliers can push straight-up wins to 500x, and on Double Ball Roulette the Golden Bet pays 1,300:1 when both balls land on the same number.

What does 35:1 mean in roulette?

A 35:1 payout means you receive 35 units of profit for every 1 unit wagered. A €10 straight-up bet that wins pays €350 in profit — you receive €360 back in total (your €10 stake plus €350 winnings). The payout ratio does not include the return of your original stake.

Why is Red/Black not a 50/50 bet?

Because the zero pocket is neither red nor black. On a European wheel with 37 pockets, 18 are red, 18 are black, and 1 is green (zero). The win probability for Red or Black is 18/37 = 48.65%, not 50%. The 1.35% shortfall from 50% is precisely where the 2.70% house edge on even-money bets comes from. On an American wheel with two green pockets, the probability drops further to 47.37%.

Do all roulette bets have the same house edge?

Yes — on a standard European wheel, every bet carries the same 2.70% house edge. On American, every bet carries 5.26% (with one exception: the Five Number Bet at 7.89%). There is no bet with a lower house edge on any given wheel variant, except where La Partage or En Prison rules apply to even-money bets on French tables.

What is the payout on a corner bet?

8:1. A corner bet covers four numbers that form a square on the betting grid. A €10 corner bet that wins pays €80 profit plus the original €10 stake, for a total return of €90. Win probability on European wheel: 10.81% (roughly once every 9 or 10 spins on average).

How do I know if a roulette payout is correct?

Use the formula: Correct Payout = (36 ÷ Numbers Covered) − 1 for European, or (38 ÷ Numbers Covered) − 1 for American, then round down to the nearest whole number. For a straight-up on European: (36 ÷ 1) − 1 = 35:1. For a dozen on European: (36 ÷ 12) − 1 = 2:1. If a casino offers different payouts, verify immediately — incorrect payouts change the house edge significantly. Use our calculator to verify any payout combination.

What is the payout for zero in roulette?

A straight-up bet on zero pays 35:1 — identical to any other number on the wheel. Zero receives no special payout treatment. Its significance is mathematical rather than a payout issue: the zero pocket causes all outside bets to lose when it lands (unless La Partage applies), which is where the house derives its edge. See our no zero roulette guide for the rare variant where zero is removed entirely.
