A chip or a jeton is a slice or a coin which represents a certain amount of value. These coins are real often used in gambling games such as roulette but they can also be used in some card games where money is on the line such as poker. The most used name or term tis coin is chip. This term found its way real quick among the poker players.
There are a lot of reasons why chips/jetons are used in gambling instead of real money. Chips are way easier to handle than cash, they are real quick to count (which prevents mistakes at the payout) and to divide them over players. Another advantage of chips (from the point of view of a casino) is that it appears that people will gamble chips faster than cash, although the chips also represent a monetary value. Moreover, the use of chips is for a lot of people part of the “casino experience”.
